Art Captures

Art Captures

High-resolution digital captures of paintings, drawings and other original artwork, photographed in our studio with Phase One equipment and color-matched to the original. For reproductions, archives, portfolios and giclée editions.

What it is

Your Artwork, Photographed Properly

A capture is a studio photograph of your original, made with even lighting, a color reference and a camera built for this work. The result is a file of up to 350 MB that holds every brushstroke and the true colors of the piece.

From that file we can print reproductions on fine art paper or canvas, matched against the original under the lights at the counter, and you keep the file for your own records and future editions.

Capture Options

Direct Capture — $58

Photographed in our studio. Minimum three-day turnaround, or by appointment.

Metallic Capture — $80

If your original has metallic paint, leaf or other reflective elements, this technique records them properly. A must for work with metallics.

Sliver Proof — $14

A 5 × 17 inch section of your capture printed at final size on the paper or canvas you’ve chosen. Included at no extra charge with your first print.

Color Swatch — $25

An 8 × 44 inch proof with part of the image at print size, the entire image small, and nine color-and-density choices to compare against the original.

Or We Scan It

Flat artwork can also go on our scanner instead of in front of the camera. When reflection isn’t a problem, a scan gives the sharpest, highest-resolution file we can make. The scan bed is 12 × 17 inches; a larger piece is scanned in overlapping sections and stitched together.

Why scan

  • Extreme sharpness and very high resolution
  • Every line of a drawing or print, edge to edge
  • Less expensive than a capture for pieces that fit the bed

Why not

  • Glossy, varnished or metallic surfaces reflect; those are better captured
  • Heavy texture and anything under glass don’t scan well
  • Large pieces mean several stitched scans, so the cost climbs with size

What it costs

$25.00 for the first scan, as a reproduction print scan: critically adjusted for color, density and contrast, and dust-spotted by an experienced technician.

$12.00 for each additional section when a piece has to be stitched. Plus a $5.00 setup per order.

Not sure which suits your piece? Bring it in and we’ll look at it together.

How it works

From Easel to Edition

1

Bring the Original

Unframed is best, but framed pieces can often be captured too. Call ahead for large or fragile work.

2

We Photograph It

In the studio, with controlled lighting and a color target, by a photographer who does this every week.

3

Match and Proof

We print a sliver proof on your chosen paper and compare it to the original, side by side, until it’s right.

4

Print the Edition

One print or a numbered run, on fine art paper or canvas, each matched to the first.

Questions People Ask Us

Flat work up to 12 × 17 inches can be scanned, which is sharper and less expensive. Larger pieces can be scanned in overlapping sections, but the cost climbs with size. Textured paintings, anything under glass, and work with metallics or a reflective surface are better captured. See Or We Scan It above, or Scanning.
