How to choose

Which Paper Is Right for the Image?

This is the question we get asked most, and the answer depends on the picture, not the paper. A few rules of thumb from our printers:

  • Soft, painterly or watercolor images look best on matte cotton or textured watercolor paper, where there’s no glare and the texture becomes part of the piece.
  • Black-and-white photographs come alive on baryta. The deep blacks and smooth tones are as close as an inkjet gets to a traditional darkroom print.
  • Everyday photographs that will be framed are usually happiest on satin photo paper: good color, little glare, easy to handle.
  • Images with lots of punch (saturated color, strong contrast) suit gloss or metallic paper, which pushes the brightness further.
  • Not sure? Order a sliver proof: a strip of your image printed on the paper you’re considering, at final size, so you can hold it in your hand before committing to the whole print.

Fine Art Papers

Cotton

100% cotton, bright white, smooth, museum quality, 300 gsm. Our most-used fine art paper and a safe choice for almost any image.

Hahnemühle Photo Rag Baryta

A cotton base with a finely textured high-gloss baryta surface. Exceptional density, color range and sharpness. Archival, with no optical brighteners. 315 gsm.

Watercolor

Bright white, 300 gsm, with the heavy texture of traditional watercolor paper. Acid and lignin free. Made for reproductions of paintings and drawings.

Hot Press Smooth

Natural white, smooth, 270 gsm. Museum-grade with Wilhelm-certified archival ratings. A quieter, warmer alternative to bright-white cotton.

10 mil Platinum Metallic

A high-gloss paper with a distinctive metallic shimmer. Striking on landscapes, cars, water and anything with light in it.

Proofs

Check Before You Commit

1

Sliver Proof

A strip of your image, about 5 × 17 inches, printed at final size on the paper you’re considering. Recommended for prints over $50.

2

Color Swatch

An 8 × 44 inch proof with part of your image at print size, the whole image small, and nine color-and-density variations to choose from.

3

Then the Print

Once you’ve approved the proof, the full print is made on the same paper, on the same printer, by the same person.

Questions People Ask Us

The largest, least-compressed version you have. A JPG from a camera or phone is fine; a TIF or full-size export from editing software is better. If you’re unsure, send what you have and we’ll tell you what it can support.
It depends on the pixels in the file and how closely it will be viewed. Send it in and one of our printers will tell you the largest size that will still look sharp.
We check every file before printing and make basic adjustments so it prints as intended. Heavier work, such as restoration or retouching, is quoted separately. See Photo Restoration & Editing.
