Mounting & Hanging

Mounting & Hanging Systems

Rigid backing boards for prints that need to stay flat, and hardware that lets a print hang cleanly without a traditional frame. All mounted and fitted in our shop.

What We Mount On

Black Gatorboard

3/16″ and ½″ thicknesses. A dense foam core faced with a moisture-resistant wood-fiber veneer. Much stiffer than foamcore at about the same weight, and a good choice behind larger framed pieces. Not acid-free.

Foamcore

3/16″, in black or white. Light and inexpensive. A polystyrene core between clay-coated paper faces. For backing artwork, mounting photo prints and everyday framing.

Aluminum Composite (ACM)

Two thin layers of aluminum bonded to a polyethylene core. Rigid, durable and flat; the same panel we use for metal prints.

How It Hangs

5″ Metal Standoff

A 5 × 5 inch aluminum block with a ½-inch standoff, fixed to the back of the panel. The print floats slightly off the wall.

Black Metal Frame Support

A metal subframe on the back of the panel, in ½-inch or 1-inch standoff heights. Made for larger prints.

Aluminum Posts

Post systems that hold the print locked in place at the corners. Available in different sizes and finishes; the selection changes, so call for current options.

Questions People Ask Us

For most framed prints, foamcore is fine. For pieces over about 24 inches, or anywhere humidity is a concern, gatorboard stays flatter. ACM is for prints that will hang without a frame.
Not necessarily. Many mounted prints are laminated or coated and hung bare, especially metal prints. If the print will be handled or lives in a bright room, a frame with glazing adds protection.
